Book Review: Boss Girl by Nic Tatano

Boss Girl by Nic Tatano
Publisher: HarperImpulse (20th Feb 2014)

Received a proof copy from the publisher, thank you!

Blurb:
Sydney Hack is the single, thirty-something VP of news for a failing network… and she also has a taste for younger men.

She soon realizes a whole lot of over-thirty female viewers do as well, so she sets out to give these women what they want; a chiselled, trophy buck in his twenties sitting on the anchor desk next to a woman…

Just.
Like.
Them.

With nothing to lose she does the unthinkable; along with three female managers who happen to be her best friends she brings out the casting couch and turns it into a sleeper sofa. Doesn't matter that the men have no television experience. As long as they look good. And there’s a hint of romance in every newscast.

Ratings skyrocket as a result, but Sydney and her female cohorts discover something else along the way…

True love is not always age appropriate.

Last year, Nic Tatano blew me away with his fabulous debut novel, Wing Girl and without a doubt, I was excited beyond words when I received a proof of his new book, Boss Girl. I started on it immediately and I am telling you, you should get it, like, now! If you're looking for a sexy, addictive new read, look no further. Boss Girl is perfect for you!

Boss Girl follows the story of a ballsy, no-bullshit VP of a news network, Sydney Hack as she and her three friends join forces to create a new TV network to attract an entirely new demographic of viewers - thirty-over women. Reversing the roles of men in news networks and being the boss of the newsroom (and bedroom), these ladies will stop at nothing to get the viewers' ratings.

I really enjoyed reading Nic's new book from the perspective of Sydney Hack (aka Neutron Syd). Nic Tatano is the perfect example where men can also rock chick lit and romantic comedies. Coming from a red-blooded male, the female characters in his books are independent, strong and gutsy - and the leading ladies are always redheads (I wonder why, Nic.. Maybe some gorgeous redhead has captured his heart?) In Boss Girl, readers are introduced to Sydney Hack who was pretty much the Miranda Priestly of the TV industry. I found her pretty scary at times and she certainly carried herself very well throughout the novel and the other characters were well-written with interesting backgrounds which provides more depth, especially Sydney's friends - Jillian, Neely and Rica.

The premise of the novel is set in the backdrop of the TV industry, which Nic is no stranger to. Boss Girl takes readers into the nitty and gritty of the industry where there's no such thing as fair play and rules when you're on top. Nic Tatano permits us a very insightful view into the goings of the lark and it's truly an experience. And there are loads of witty behind-the-scenes facts which really captured my attention - at some point, I asked myself, who knew? - all I'm saying is that Nic's experience in the industry has really shone through in the book.

Well, I might want to warn you that Boss Girl discusses about the most taboo topic today: sex. Lots and lots of sex. More specifically, sleeping your way to get the job. And loads of bed hopping which might be OK with some of you, but to some others, maybe not. To be honest, I wasn't really keen on the sleeping with co-workers and creating a rota of who gets to shag who, but I guess it's pretty much the blatant truth behind the scenes.

Boss Girl is sassy, bold and a breath of fresh air. A book based on the real stories behind the scenes which features strong, independent women in control and friendship. A beacon of hope for women out there who are afraid of being judged. So what? Just be brave and be yourself. This book has shed some light on the topics in the world which are given less attention to - feminism, discrimination and gender equality. Clever, witty and seriously addictive - one you shouldn't miss! Some parts made me pump my fist and laugh!

Rating: 8/10

The redhead bombshell Scarlett Johansson would be the perfect Sydney, methinks!

  1. Thanks for the kind words, Kevin. As for your question about redheads, I'm married to one, so my main character is always a redhead. It's a little shout out to my wife and she gets a real kick out of it.
