Blog Tour: Thirteen Weddings by Paige Toon - Content

Please welcome the lovely and ever charming Paige Toon, author of FABULOUS books, including her latest, Thirteen Weddings (here's my review) on my blog today! As you know, Paige's books are somehow or rather linked to one another and today, Paige tells us more about she connects every one of her characters with each other.

The Links Between My Books by Paige Toon

One thing I hear time and again from my regular readers is how they like to hear about past characters in future books. For me, it’s a way of keeping them alive. I’ve often said that I like to imagine them all as living in some sort of parallel universe. But over the years, it has become harder and harder for me to work out who’s supposed to be doing what, and at what particular time. It’s part of the reason why I decided to do an infographic competition (see below for details!).

Thirteen Weddings has more links than any other book, but there is no mention of Daisy or Luis. I have thought about writing them a little short story sometime for The Hidden Paige, my new, free book club (sign up at paigetoon.com), so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, here are the Thirteen Wedding links to my various books!

Pictures of Lily
Thirteen Weddings is most strongly linked to Pictures of Lily because Bronte was first mentioned in this book. You never get to meet her, but she is the editorial assistant who Lily covers for. The first time Lily covers for her, Bronte is away on a photoshoot. The second time, Bronte has appendicitis. Bronte is eventually promoted to the picture desk as an assistant, and Lily is encouraged to go for her job. In the years since Pictures of Lily, Bronte worked her way up the picture desk to second-in-command.

Lily, meanwhile, married Ben and is back in Adelaide. We hear from Lily in Thirteen Weddings when she takes photographs of famous actor Joseph Strike and his partner Alice for Bronte to use in the magazine she works for. Lily is pregnant with her first child, and later we hear from her again after she gives birth.

Nicola, the wedding-obsessed receptionist Lily worked alongside in Pictures of Lily, also gets a mention – although not by name. She’s just got engaged – maybe Bronte will get to do her wedding someday…

One Perfect Summer

You first met Joe (Joseph Strike) and Alice in One Perfect Summer, where they fell in love, were torn apart, and many years later, Joe went on to become a famous movie star – putting him further out of reach than Alice could ever imagine. Of course, by then she was married to Lukas (who has links to The Longest Holiday, but that’s one for the infographic…). In Thirteen Weddings, Alice is pregnant with Joe’s child, although they are not married yet. Lily snaps the pictures of him touching her baby bump and passes them on to Bronte. (You can read this chapter from Lily’s point of view in Chapter 1 of The Hidden Paige, coming soon. Sign up so you don’t miss out!)

The Longest Holiday
Bronte’s flatmate and eventual best friend Bridget also features in The Longest Holiday. In this book, she was the heroine Laura’s best friend Marty’s friend (got that?) and Laura wasn’t too keen on her at first. But over time, the straight-talking Bridget that we know and hopefully love emerged. I wanted to write more about her, so she is now the link between these two books. Bridget talks about Laura and Leo in Thirteen Weddings, and the epilogue to The Longest Holiday takes place when Bridget isn’t around for Bronte’s actual thirtieth birthday, hence why she organises the camping trip to the Lake District.

Lucy in The Sky
I couldn’t have Bronte go to Sydney without giving a nod to two of my favourite characters, Lucy and Nathan. They’re mentioned only in hindsight, but you do hear that they have a baby now. Aw!

Johnny Be Good / Baby Be Mine
Rock star Johnny Jefferson does of course get a mention in Thirteen Weddings, when Bronte wryly refers to wedding singer Lachie as having: ‘more confidence that Johnny frigging Jefferson. He’s a wedding singer, not a rock star, for crying out loud.’ Even so, he’s a hot one…

I think that’s it, but I might be wrong. Drop me a line on Twitter @PaigeToonAuthor or www.facebook.com/PaigeToonAuthor if you spot any that I’ve missed, or better still, have a crack at my infographic competition – details below. Closing date is 31 August, so you still have plenty of time!

DESIGN AN INFOGRAPHIC & WIN A CAMERA!

Design an infographic featuring the characters from my books and how they link to each other, and you could win a Nikon 1 J2 Compact System camera worth £200. (This prize is inspired by the fact that Bronte from Thirteen Weddings is a wedding photographer.) Plus, my lovely publishers Simon & Schuster will turn your design into two A2-size posters – one for you, and one for me to put on my office wall!

Make your infographic as pretty or cool as you can – have a look at some examples on Google. I will post pictures of my Top 5 on Twitter and Facebook for everyone to see.

Email a PDF of your design to me at paigetoonauthor@gmail.com. I’ll ask the winner to provide a higher quality version for it to be printed as a poster, so just keep this in mind when designing.

Big thanks to my lovely publisher Simon & Schuster for providing the camera and poster!
