Alexa Holland’s father was her hero—until her shocking discovery that she and her mother weren’t his only family. Ever since, Alexa has worked to turn her life in a different direction and forge her own identity outside of his terrible secrets,. But when she meets a man who’s as damaged by her father’s mistakes as she is, Alexa must help him.

Caine Carraway wants nothing to do with Alexa’s efforts at redemption, but it’s not so easy to push her away. Determined to make her hate him, he brings her to the edge of her patience and waits for her to walk away. But his actions only draw them together and, despite the odds, they begin an intense and explosive affair.

Only Caine knows he can never be the white knight that Alexa has always longed for. And when they’re on the precipice of danger, he finds he’ll do anything to protect either one of them from being hurt again…

I have followed Samantha Young’s On Dublin Street series since the first book and I cannot wait to read the latest, Echoes from Scotland Street. When Piatkus got in touch with me for a copy of Hero, the first book of a brand new series, I immediately jumped at the chance to read it.

Hero follows the story of Alexa Holland, a photographer’s trusted personal assistant and Caine Carraway, a successful, driven owner of a financial company. What Caine doesn’t know when he meets Alexa on a photoshoot is that her family – specifically her father – is the cause of the destruction of his family. When she’s fired for a little cock-up at work, Caine offers her a job – as his PA – but Caine is known for his horrible mood swings. With all his tantrums and mercurial behaviour, Alexa can’t help but think that he’s the Boss from Hell. What with all that tension, surely they need a form of release, surely? *smirks*

I find Samantha Young’s writing really addictive and in Hero, I adored Alexa. She’s tough, headstrong and I loved her smart mouth that spurts witty, biting remarks. I liked the constant sense of redemption that she has, always thinking about making it up to Caine for her father’s horrible actions. Oh, yes. Caine Carraway. Now he is fine. Samantha Young described him with such finesse and flair. Immediately, I fell in love this broken man. Both characters had dirt in their past, as the plot progress, bit by bit of their past began to unravel and it bode well with the progress of their relationship.

Hero isn’t that lengthy, in number of pages and plot wise, I liked it exactly how it was. I really enjoyed reading about the setting of the book, which is in Boston. The reason I read is to escape and I did that when I was reading Hero. Without a doubt, readers will be kept guessing about what happened to Caine’s family and Alexa’s father’s involvement in it, so the little mystery behind the story lures you in and you’ll be rewarded by the big discovery.

Hero is quite intense, exciting and really addictive. I couldn’t get enough of Alexa and Caine. Oh, beware, it’s rather steamy. What else can you expect? But rest assured, it’s a love story. A very sexy one, that is.

Hero by Samantha Young is published by Piatkus in paperback and eBook. You can find of all Samantha Young’s titles in the Kobo website here.
