There’s a little part of me that craves for a good romance with the angsty, emotional declarations of love and the push-and-pull relationship between the characters, once in a while. I am happy to say that Lick was hugely satisfying. I have only read the third book in the Stage Dive series, which was Lead, last year and I enjoyed it immensely.
Lick is the beginning of everything, where the series kicks off. It follows the story of college student, Evelyn’s wild night of debauchery in Vegas with her best friend, Lauren in tow. What was supposed to be a night to let her hair loose and finally relax, turned out to be the wildest night of her life and what’s worse, she can’t even remember a sliver of what happened. That’s not that corker. This is, she wakes up married to the rock god that is David Ferris.
Since I was a complete tit for reading Lead before the previous books, I might have spoilt it for myself but rest assured, it’s romance and they always have their happy endings. In Lick, the story focuses on Evelyn and David and I could safely say that Lick is my favourite book in the series and I have only the last book left which is Deep.
Right from the start, I could see myself being immersed in the rock and roll lifestyle of the band members of Stage Dive and reading Lick was my only experience in the whole shebang. I was completely taken by the protagonist, Evelyn because there’s something about her that made me like her. My guess is her sense of will and determination in showing David who’s boss and there’s also a vulnerable side to her.
Reading Lick gave me a great sense of nostalgia because it reminded me so much of one of my favourite books, Johnny Be Good by Paige Toon, and God knows how many favourites I have. I liked that the relationship between Evelyn and David wasn’t an “instalove”, but instead, I really enjoyed reading the bits and pieces of how Evelyn and David met in Vegas as they revisit what exactly happened that night through fragments that sparked Evelyn’s memory.
From the beautiful and arty Portland to the glorious and scenic Monterrey, the setting of the book couldn’t be any more perfect for a romance novel. The pacing was spot-on and I gobbled up the book in a day. Kylie Scott’s writing is addictive and it should come with a warning! Lick was a roller coaster of emotions that would guarantee you a heart full of love and there are some steamy scenes, it’s romance after all, but the romance in the book was equal parts sweet and passionate.
