After reading and loving Lick, the first book in the series, I dived right into Play, which is the second book that follows up what happened in Lick and this time, the focus is on Anne and Mal, the playful drummer who has got a killer charm that could melt underwear.
As I’ve mentioned, Play follows the story of Anne and Mal, the drummer and it’s completely different from Lick because it’s less dramatic but equally sweet. Anne, who is struggling financially for a while now, between supporting herself and her younger sister, Lizzy’s college education, she hasn’t got time for any other things in life. Then one day, she gets royally screwed over by her friend and she’s on her ass. Mal, on the other hand, is completely taken by Anne after meeting her for the first time. So they strike a deal. They’ll pretend to be in a relationship. But we all know what would happen, no?
Mal made his first appearance in Lick and I loved him. A natural charmer and an ineffable plethora of one-liners and dirty jokes, Mal exudes confidence and charisma. Kylie Scott has once again perfected the quintessential, ideal male specimen. The romance between Anne and Mal was just wonderful. They make such a cute couple with their pretend relationship but things did get a bit hot and heavy when the lines blurred. Especially their kissathon.
I loved the playful banter between Anne and Mal and I couldn’t get enough of their sweet and endearing relationship, no matter how much it was for show, but deep down, I knew he liked her. It was just Mal being too macho to accept that he’s got whipped. For once, I really liked that it wasn’t an instalove kind of thing going on between them. Besides the fact that Anne is a HUGE FANGIRL of Mal, I liked that it took about 150 pages down before things got hot and heavy.
Play is an excellent continuation of the series as it was just as good as Lick but my heart would always have a soft spot for Ev and Davie. Sexy, sizzling yet sweet, Play was just a treat for romance junkies, paired with some funny, light-hearted moments, it was a lovely slice of romance that would entice its readers.
